Taking family portrait shots can be tedious. While many will opt for the traditional photo studio with well-used backdrops, standard posed shots and recycled props, there are also a growing group that prefer to do it yourself.
Here are some poses you can consider for your next photoshoot! But before we get into the poses, here are some fundamental pointers to note.
Expression is everything
If you can get your family laughing or making the perfect face, the photo will be a big hit! If there are small children or babies involved, make sure to get their attention.
Lighting is king
Light can make or break any photograph, and portraits are no different. The biggest thing you want to make sure you do for portraits is to get light into your subjects’ eyes.
Without further ado, here are some poses you can try out with your family.
1. Holding hands pose
This is an excellent family portrait pose to start with. It is a simple pose, with the parents holding their child’s hands. Sometimes, the little one can get a little mischievous and start to lift up her legs and do a swing while holding her parents’ hands. Be sure not to miss this shot!
2. You-lead-the-way pose
Let the child walk ahead of one of the parents as if they are leading them.
This pose is great for toddlers in the first months after they start walking. Or even for those kids up to 3 years old. Give them the space to walk ahead of the parents. These months are elusive as the child becomes more and more confident. This is the reason why parents like to capture this period while it lasts.
3. Sit down and relax pose
Get the family to sit close so that they can hold hands or each other’s shoulders. Create some conversations with one another. Crack a joke, say something funny, or recount a story. Make sure every is comfortable and seated close to each other. The younger ones can sit on the parent’s lap. One of the best aspects of this pose is that you can be at eye level with both the parents and the children.
4. Lift up the baby pose
This is a fun pose that reminds the viewer of the famous Lion King scene at the beginning of the movie.
Make sure the shot is quick. You wouldnt want tiredness to show up on the parent’s face.
5. Running pose
Get the father or mother to chase the kids.
This pose gives you the opportunity to capture movement and the candid happy and excited faces of the child.
6. Kiss the child pose
This photo is a must when it comes to family photo poses with a child. Go close up. Face to face with the child.
7. Silly pose
Find your favourite music and start grooving. Get your other half and your kids to join in.
This can be done outdoors, indoors or anywhere well lit. Best to shoot all their faces at once. This probably requires some planning ahead.
